Sock It To Me!

I fully realize that even the title of this article dates me. Yes, I'm old enough (barely) to remember "Laugh-In".

Inspiration for the tricks I use in my shows comes from a variety of sources. Sometimes it's things I've learned at magic convention around the world. Other times it's a flash of an idea on how to perform an old trick in a new way. Other times, the inspirational source is a bit more mundane. This summer you will see a magic routine inspired by...my sock drawer.

For most of my life, I was a "sensible sock guy". My socks weren't too loud or colorful. Just dark, dignified socks. Then, for some reason, people started buying me wild socks as presents. I now have several pair of bigfoot socks as well as Godzilla and skunk socks. I have socks with sayings on them and socks with bunnies coming out of top hats. Very few of these socks did I purchase on my own. I have come not just to tolerate, but to actually LIKE wild socks.

So a few weeks ago, as I was pondering whether to wear my platypus or yeti socks, I was hit with an idea. What if I could do a trick with dinosaur socks for libraries using the CSLP theme? Then another idea sparked and I thought "Wait! I could also do it with gardening and farming socks for the iREAD libraries." Fast forward a few weeks later and a package from Temu arrived at my door filled with crazy socks that are going to be part of my Summer Reading Program library shows in a few months.

I think both children and adults are going to be amazed by this routine. Who would have thought that a fun, interactive magic routine could come from a sock drawer? You never know where the inspiration is going to come from!
