Building a Magic Show

The Hero-themed Summer Reading Program magic show is coming together quite nicely.  I've put together a ton of ideas, now comes the hard part...weeding things down to a 40-minute show!

After I decide which tricks and routines I'm going to do for the Summer Reading Program, I have to decide which order to put them in.  Then I need to design the transitions that will lead me from one trick to the next.  I also need to figure out where everything will be placed, how I'll move and how I'll introduce and get rid of my props during the show.  Let's see, then I need to determine the jokes, gags and other pieces of comedy I'll use (and where to put them in the show).  Oh and don't forget...my costuming.  I'm thinking of wearing bright colors this year as a tip of the hat to comic book heroes.

And you thought I just showed up and did tricks, didn't you?

There's a lot of thought and planning that goes into my Summer Reading Program magic shows.  It sometimes starts years in advance.  As soon as I know the theme for a Summer Reading Program, I file it away in the back of my mind.  Then, when I'm learning new routines or browsing through a magic shoppe, I look for tricks that might fit with that theme. I also keep a notebook handy just for library ideas.

Some would say it's a lot of work for a show that's only going to last 8 weeks or so.  I look at it differently.

I love what I do and I absolutely love the reactions I get to my show.  Yes, it's a lot of work, but it's well worth it.
